Wythnos Cymraeg!

This week Year 1 have been very busy preparing for the school Eisteddford. Many children took part in the welsh home task and created some amazing welsh dragons!! The dragons are now proudly displayed around the school showcasing the brilliant artistic talents at Coedpenmaen. A massive thank you to the children and parents for all their hard work! Da yawn pawb!!

The children have had lots of fun taking part in a variety of welsh activities throughout the week such as labelling a map of Wales using Google maps, drawing a welsh dragon using the computer program 2Simple and writing their own poems about Wales.

We also looked at the Welsh artist Kyffin Williams and experimented with the palette knives, creating different textures and patterns. After we had decided on our favourite Kyffin Williams painting, we had a go at re-creating it using the palette knives! The paintings were then entered into the art competition for the Eisteddford and four winners were chosen. Llongyfarchiadau i Jake, Freddy, Brooke and Grace!

A fantastic start to the Spring Term!

Year 1 and 2 have had a brilliant start to the Spring Term, finding out all about Australia and comparing it to their own country of Wales. Using Google maps they discovered that the capital of Australia was Canberra and that recently Australia has suffered from terrible bush fires! After watching news reports on the Bush fires, the children had a go at writing their own news reports on the fires.

The children especially enjoyed a visit from Mr Carter's Australian brother Bruce Carter-waiting in anticipation as Bruce boarded the plane ready to arrive the following day! When Bruce returned home the children were very excited to find out that they had received an email from Bruce, asking them all about Coedpenmaen Primary and could they send him an email. They had great fun creating their own emails to send to Bruce along with a variety of attachments such as photographs of our school, a video tour, a copy of our school song and photographs of our local area.

Eager to reply to Bruce Carter's email, the children created a school song to tell him all about our wonderful school! After working as a class to create a chorus the children worked in groups to write a verse. They then recorded their song using Garage Band on the iPads.

The children had a great time on their recent walk around the local area, taking
photographs of our school and Pontypridd to send their emails to Bruce. Keen to show
Bruce our brilliant school, they explored the school environment and took lots of
photographs of our local area using the iPads and cameras.
